BEIJING, April 19 (INP): “The Chinese government always asks Chinese nationals overseas to abide by laws and regulations of the host countries and respect local customs and traditions,” said China’s foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin.

He was responding to a question regarding the news of a Chinese national being held in police protection in Pakistan on accusations of alleged blasphemy, according to Gwadar Pro.

“The Chinese Embassy in Pakistan is verifying the information,” the spokesperson said, adding that “If the incident involves Chinese nationals, our Embassy will provide consular protection and assistance within the purview of its duty.”

According to media reports, a ‘Chinese’ engineer was accused of alleged blasphemy during an argument with his Pakistani subordinates at his workplace.

The accused was detained by police on April 16, following a formal complaint by two Pakistani dumpster drivers.

The arrest sparked protests by a charged mob, who gathered outside the residential camp of the Chinese national.
